Wigmore
Wigmore was the hub of the Mortimers for nearly four centuries. The ancient castle is within easy walking distance of the village and the scattered ruins of the gatehouse, towers, curtain walls and stone keep are now in the care of English Heritage. Wigmore Abbey, an Augustinian foundation, was endowed by the Mortimers but all that remains is now incorporated into the structure of a large farmhouse, although the outline is still delineated.
Built on the pinnacle of a hill overlooking the village, St. James church has a Norman nave and herringbone masonry is visible on the outside of the north wall. The parish is still the Parish of Wigmore Abbey and has nine ancient churches in the surrounding villages of Adforton, Brampton Bryan, Burrington, Downton-on-the-Rock, Elton, Leinthall .Starkes, Leintwardine, Pipe Aston and Wigmore. All are open during daylight hours and well worth a visit.
