Dore Abbey
Abbeydore: The foundation of the Abbey of Dore began in 1147 by the Cistercians.
Suppressed in 1535, it fell into disrepair and was serving as a cattle shed when John, Viscount Scudamore began its repair in 1632. John Abel, later King's Carpenter, worked on the screen. Re-consecrated in 1634, St. Mary's is one of the very few English parish churches of Cistercian origin regularly used for worship. A delightful place to visit and home to the Dore Abbey Musical Festival and other events throughout the year.
