Dorstone
Dorstone lies at the head of the Golden Valley, some six miles east of the 'book town' Hay-on-Wye and the River Dore rises nearby. The 'golden' legend here is that a fish was caught with a golden ring in its gills. Above the village is the mound upon which stands Arthur's Stone, an ancient burial chamber dating from the Neolithic period 3,400 to 2,400 BC. The early settlers on the land to farm and live in communities used such chambers to bury their dead for several generations. Originally it would have been covered with an earth mound but this has eroded away and what remains is the stone infrastructure. It is one of five similar structures to be found in the Golden Valley and is accessed via an ancient lane, known as Arthur's Stone lane.
The Golden Valley is well known for the quality of its dairy produce ranging from sheep's milk ice-cream at Peterchurch to Dorstone, Ragstone, Wealdon Round and Finn cheeses made in Dorstone.
